Understanding the Meta Glasses Used by the New Orleans Attacker to Scope Out the French Quarter

A tragic incident occurred on New Year’s Day in New Orleans when a man drove a truck into a crowd, killing 14 people. The FBI revealed that the perpetrator, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, had used his Meta smart glasses to scout the French Quarter and plan the attack. The glasses, made in partnership with Ray-Ban, are equipped with a camera, speakers, and artificial intelligence that can be controlled through voice commands and gestures. While the glasses do not have a built-in display, they can capture images and video, livestream to compatible social platforms, make calls, and provide information through Meta’s AI assistant.

However, the glasses cannot perform complex tasks like making reservations or providing detailed directions. Additionally, there are visual indicators that show when the camera is in use, ensuring transparency and privacy. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, declined to comment on the incident. The tragic event has raised concerns about the potential misuse of technology and the need for responsible use of wearable devices that have the capability to record and livestream events.
