President-elect Donald Trump and some of his allies in Congress have blamed the New Orleans truck attack on President Joe Biden’s border policies, even though the attacker was identified as a U.S. citizen and Army veteran named Shamsud-Din Jabbar. Despite initial reports from Fox News that the attacker had crossed the border from Mexico, it was later clarified that he was born in the United States. Trump and his allies, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Rep. Mike Johnson, continued to push the narrative that the attack was a result of the Biden administration’s open border policies. They claimed that dangerous individuals were entering the country and posing a threat to national security.
Trump doubled down on his message on Truth Social, stating that the Biden administration’s border policies have led to a “violent erosion of Safety, National Security, and Democracy.” Other Republicans also used the opportunity to highlight their platform of securing the border to protect Americans. However, statistics show that the number of migrants on the terrorist watchlist crossing the border is extremely low, and previous administrations have seen similar numbers of individuals attempting to cross.
A Trump spokesperson defended the president-elect’s remarks, stating that criminals crossing the border have committed heinous crimes, and radical Islamic terrorism has entered the country. Despite the pushback, Trump and his allies continue to blame Biden’s border policies for the New Orleans attack, ignoring the facts surrounding the attacker’s citizenship and background.
