Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a former model soldier in the Army, shocked his friends and family when he carried out a terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve. Despite being known for his disciplined and dedicated nature, financial troubles and personal issues led him to fall under the influence of ISIS. Authorities believe he was inspired by the terrorist group when he killed 14 people in a truck attack on Bourbon Street.
Jabbar’s path to radicalization remains a mystery to investigators, as he never displayed any red flags or signs of extremist beliefs to his loved ones. His previous career in the military and subsequent attempts in real estate and consulting were marred by financial struggles, including multiple divorces and mounting debts.
His family described Jabbar as a caring and helpful individual who stepped up to care for his father after he suffered a stroke. While he openly embraced his Muslim faith, he did not discuss radical ideologies or express any extremist views with those close to him.
Despite occasional posts about Islam on social media and his increasing devotion to the religion after his divorce, Jabbar’s neighbors and friends did not notice any signs of radicalization. His quiet demeanor and preference for praying at home left those who knew him shocked and confused by his sudden turn towards violence.
