UCLA basketball prepares to face tough road crowds in Big Ten conference

UCLA faces a tough challenge as they navigate their first Big Ten schedule, with noisy and rowdy crowds unlike their Pac-12 experience. Nine conference teams average over 10,000 fans per home game, creating a raucous atmosphere for visitors. Nebraska, in particular, boasts a 19-game winning streak at home and is aiming to tie their school record against the Bruins. Coach Mick Cronin is familiar with the challenge after a previous visit with Cincinnati, calling Pinnacle Bank Arena one of the best he’s seen.

The Bruins will have to adjust to playing in front of the lively Big Ten crowds after their quieter Pac-12 experiences. The team had the lowest average attendance in the Pac-12, but they can expect double or more fans at Big Ten stadiums. Cronin emphasized the need for toughness and strong defense in these environments where opposing teams feed off the energy of the home crowd.

Injuries to players like William Kyle III and Eric Dailey Jr. are challenges UCLA is facing, but Dailey has proven to perform well, even with a face mask. Cronin also mentioned former UCLA player Berke Buyuktuncel, who is now playing for Nebraska, saying he fits well with their team. The Bruins’ success in December from three-point range could be advantageous as they face the Big Ten competition. Overall, UCLA will have to adapt to the new environment and level of competition in the Big Ten as they fight for success in their first season in the conference.
