Warren Upton, the Pearl Harbor attack’s oldest survivor, passes away at 105 years old in California

Warren Upton, the oldest living survivor of the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the last remaining survivor of the USS Utah, has passed away at the age of 105. Upton died after suffering from pneumonia at a hospital in California. The USS Utah was moored at Pearl Harbor when the attack took place on December 7, 1941, leading the US into World War II.

Upton recalled the moment when the torpedoes hit the Utah, causing the ship to list and capsize. He managed to swim ashore to Ford Island and sought shelter from Japanese planes before being rescued. Over the years, Upton saw many of his shipmates pass away, leaving only a few survivors by 2020.

With Upton’s death, the number of survivors from the Pearl Harbor attack continues to dwindle, with only 15 remaining out of the estimated 87,000 military personnel on Oahu on the day of the attack. Upton’s story of survival and resilience serves as a reminder of the sacrifice and courage displayed by those who experienced the tragedy of Pearl Harbor.
