The Sacramento Kings have fired coach Mike Brown less than halfway through his third season with the team, citing a five-game losing streak as the reason behind the decision. Brown, who won NBA Coach of the Year in his first season with the Kings, was let go as the team struggled with a 13-18 record this season. The firing comes just six months after Brown signed a contract extension through the 2026-27 season. Brown publicly criticized De’Aaron Fox for his role in a game-winning play on Thursday night, which ultimately led to the Kings’ defeat against the Detroit Pistons.
Despite high hopes for the season, the Kings have been disappointing, with an NBA-worst 3-11 record in games decided by five points or fewer. The team, led by players like Fox and DeMar DeRozan, was aiming to finish in the top six in the Western Conference and avoid the play-in tournament. Brown, who previously coached in Cleveland and Los Angeles, leaves Sacramento with a 107-88 record over two-plus seasons.
