Once more, Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has erupted

One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea, erupted on Monday morning with lava fountains reaching over 200 feet and a plume of toxic gas rising above Hawaii. The eruption began at 2 a.m. and is expected to continue for some time, with no immediate threat to infrastructure. The volcanic smog, known as “vog”, is expected to impact areas south and west of the volcano and residents are advised to stay indoors. Lava fountains as high as 262 feet were reported, along with the ejection of “lava bombs” and molten material from the crater’s floor. As of 5:30 a.m., 400 acres of the caldera floor were covered in lava. Kilauea has been erupting since 1983, with its most recent eruptions occurring in June and September. In 2018, an eruption resulted in the destruction of dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. The volcano is located in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.
