Exploring the Ocean World: MBARI’s Cutting-Edge Technology

MBARI’s Environmental Sample Processor (ESP) is a cutting-edge “lab in a can” that allows scientists and resource managers to monitor the health of aquatic environments in real-time. Equipped with advanced sensors and wireless connectivity, the ESP collects data on harmful toxins, water quality, and biodiversity. This innovative technology revolutionizes monitoring of the ocean and freshwater ecosystems, providing cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional sampling methods.

The ESP, developed by MBARI over two decades, has been deployed in various projects, including tracking harmful algal blooms in the Great Lakes and aiding salmon conservation efforts in Northern California. The ESP’s ability to collect environmental DNA (eDNA) further enhances biodiversity monitoring and assessment of aquatic environments.

In June 2024, MBARI collaborated with researchers from across the country to test eDNA sampling technology at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This effort aimed to create standardized benchmarks for the eDNA research community and support the National Aquatic eDNA Strategy published by the White House Office of Science, Technology, and Policy. The strategy focuses on expanding eDNA technology for monitoring and protecting aquatic ecosystems, setting performance metrics for reliable agency use.

MBARI’s ESP technology continues to drive innovation in ecological research and environmental response strategies. Collaborations with partners such as NOAA, USGS, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium facilitate the sharing of MBARI’s advanced technology with the broader scientific community and decision-makers. The ESP’s impact on monitoring aquatic ecosystems and advancing biodiversity research highlights its potential to support conservation efforts and sustainable management of marine and freshwater resources.
