The Northeast woke up to snow on the first day of winter, with snowfall totals ranging from a dusting to six inches. The highest total of 9.4 inches was recorded in Milton, Massachusetts. Cold temperatures are expected to continue with freeze alerts in effect for parts of the Southeast. In the Northwest, heavy rain and mountain snow are falling from California to Washington and will continue as low-pressure systems move onshore. Higher elevations can expect fresh snow, while rainfall totals range from 0.5-3 inches. Strong winds are also possible in California, Oregon, and Wyoming. Meanwhile, temperatures in the western half of the country will soar above average, potentially breaking records in cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas. The warmer air will spread over the Plains by Sunday and continue throughout the week, with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day expected to be warm with highs at or above average. While a white Christmas may not be in the cards for many areas, a wintry Christmas Eve is possible in some regions.
