Man convicted of fatal shooting during confrontation at Covina condo complex
Trevor Thompson was found guilty of first-degree murder, among other charges, for the fatal shooting of Joey Casias during a confrontation at a condo complex in Covina four years ago. Thompson faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. The incident occurred when Casias, along with two teens, confronted Thompson after seeing him rummaging inside a BMW parked outside their home. A fight broke out, leading to Thompson shooting and killing Casias.
Thompson’s lawyer claimed self-defense, stating that his client only pulled a gun after being hit and kneed. However, Covina police Detective Oswaldo Preciado testified that evidence suggested Casias was followed and shot in the back, refuting the self-defense claim.
The case will return to court for sentencing on Jan. 31, where Thompson may receive a life sentence. The prosecution argued that the incident was not self-defense, but an act of vigilantism.
