A woman flying from Los Angeles to Philadelphia was flagged by TSA officers after almost 90 forbidden items were found in her carry-on luggage during a routine screening at LAX. The officer discovered 82 fireworks, three knives, two replica firearms, and a canister of pepper spray, all of which are prohibited in carry-on bags. The discovery was called “extremely concerning” by LAX TSA Federal Security Director Jason Pantages.
The passenger was interviewed by airport police and the explosives were confiscated by the bomb squad. While fireworks and explosives are never allowed on planes, replica firearms and knives can be placed in checked baggage. Pepper spray, on the other hand, has more complex regulations based on the size and content of the canister.
Travelers can use the MyTSA app or contact @AskTSA on social media for guidance on what can be brought in checked or carry-on bags. This incident serves as a reminder for all travelers to carefully check their luggage before heading to the airport.
