Last Month, More People Became Newly Housed in San Diego Than Became Newly Homeless

In a rare positive development, San Diego saw more people exiting homelessness than becoming homeless for the first time in November. The Regional Task Force on Homelessness reported that 950 individuals were housed last month, while 894 accessed homeless services for the first time. This marks a significant shift from previous trends, reflecting a 30 percent year-over-year increase in formerly homeless individuals finding homes.

Task Force CEO Tamera Kohler expressed optimism about this progress but also highlighted the need for continued efforts to address the housing market’s inability to meet the demand for low-income housing. She emphasized the importance of having a dedicated funding source to support homeless individuals, including seniors, veterans, and families.

While the positive trend in November is encouraging, there are concerns about whether it will be sustainable in the long run. Kohler urged for more comprehensive efforts to ensure that these positive trend lines continue into 2025 and beyond.

As San Diego works towards addressing its homelessness crisis, there is a recognition of the need for systemic changes in the housing market and continued support for vulnerable populations. The recent data offers a glimmer of hope for the city as it navigates the complex challenges of homelessness and housing insecurity.
