Environmental organizations file lawsuit against California’s low-carbon fuel standard

Environmental groups have filed lawsuits against California’s trading program for transportation fuel emissions, claiming that its support of biofuels will increase air pollution and greenhouse gases. The California Air Resources Board’s low-carbon fuel standard was amended last month, prompting the lawsuits from Communities for a Better Environment and other groups in Fresno County Superior Court. The first suit accuses CARB of violating the California Environmental Quality Act by not analyzing the environmental impact of incentivizing biofuels. Another suit by Food and Water Watch and other organizations alleges that CARB failed to properly assess the environmental effects of incentivizing gas production from dairy manure. These lawsuits highlight concerns about the potential negative impacts of biofuels and dairy manure gas on the environment, and demonstrate the ongoing debate over the best strategies for reducing emissions in California. California’s environmental policies continue to be a subject of controversy and legal challenges as stakeholders seek to balance economic interests with environmental preservation.
