Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, has reportedly asked the newspaper’s editorial board to take a break from writing about Donald Trump, sparking controversy over his influence on the publication’s coverage. This request comes after Soon-Shiong blocked the board from endorsing Kamala Harris for president, resulting in resignations and subscription losses. Soon-Shiong expressed concern about endorsing a candidate fueling division and called for the newspaper to be more fair and balanced. He plans to incorporate an artificial intelligence-powered “bias meter” and has implemented a policy banning critical editorials of Trump unless an opposing view is also published. Staff have expressed concerns about their ability to do their job without fear of retaliation. Soon-Shiong, a biotech billionaire, acquired the Los Angeles Times in 2018 and has invested nearly $1bn in the paper. The publication’s management team is reviewing the concerns raised by staff regarding Soon-Shiong’s involvement in shaping editorial content.
