Major League Soccer is gearing up for its 30th season, set to kick off the weekend of Feb. 22-23. The schedule, released recently, includes exciting matchups and changes to the format due to the addition of San Diego FC, bringing the total number of teams in the league to 30.
The defending MLS Cup champions, the Galaxy, will begin their title defense against San Diego FC on Feb. 23, while LAFC will open their campaign against Minnesota United on Feb. 22. The season will feature key games like the first-ever MLS match and MLS Cup, both involving D.C. United.
Teams will play 34 regular-season games, facing conference opponents twice and six different cross-conference opponents. This means the highly-anticipated El Trafico matchups between the Galaxy and LAFC will only occur twice next year. Furthermore, the Galaxy will have a busy start, including participation in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
In addition to regular matches, important events like the FIFA Club World Cup and Leagues Cup tournament will impact the schedule. The annual MLS All-Star Game is set for July 23 in Austin, Texas, with the opponent to be determined later.
On the horizon is the MLS SuperDraft, with the Galaxy holding multiple picks while LAFC has traded away their selections. Overall, fans can expect an action-packed season filled with rivalries, new matchups, and the celebration of 30 years of Major League Soccer.
