Prosecutors have filed another murder charge against the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer, bringing the total number of alleged victims to seven. The latest charge is connected to 24-year-old victim Valerie Mack, whose skeletal remains were found in 2000. A hair linked to the wife or daughter of suspect Rex Heuermann was found near the victim’s wrist. Heuermann’s daughter would have been 4 years old at the time of Mack’s killing, and his estranged wife is not considered a suspect. The victims, many of whom were sex workers, met Heuermann after advertising their services.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney emphasized the importance of justice for the victims and their families. Attorney Gloria Allred, representing the families of several victims, stressed that the victims were innocent women trying to support themselves and their families.
Investigators are exploring possible links between Heuermann and other unsolved murders in the area. Mack’s loved ones have been informed of the progress in the investigation, and they are grateful for the small amount of closure provided by the task force.
Heuermann has been indicted in connection with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, and Jessica Taylor. Costilla was killed in 1993, Taylor in 2003, Brainard-Barnes in 2007, Barthelemy in 2009, and Costello and Waterman in 2010. Heuermann, a New York City architect, was arrested in July 2023.
