Another Lawsuit Filed Against Chiquita Canyon Landfill Over Odors in Los Angeles County

A second lawsuit has been filed in Los Angeles federal court against the owners of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill, alleging that residents of Castaic have been sickened by harmful fumes and odors from the site. The lawsuit, brought by Los Angeles County, claims that the landfill operators have failed to control an underground smoldering reaction within the landfill, leading to the emission of noxious odors, hazardous gases, and toxic leachate into nearby communities. The county is seeking an injunction to stop the emissions, orders to relocate affected residents temporarily, and civil penalties for violations of environmental and public health laws.
Despite efforts by various agencies to address the issue, including the installation of gas extraction wells and flares, residents continue to suffer from health issues and foul odors. The lawsuit aims to hold the landfill owners accountable and ensure immediate action to protect the impacted communities. Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo has highlighted the health impacts of the emissions on residents, including a newly identified cancer cluster. Residents have reported headaches, respiratory issues, and other ailments due to the odors, which the landfill operators attribute to a landfill reaction.
