Exotic dancer Crystal Mangum, who accused three Duke University lacrosse players of raping her in 2006, admitted this week that she made up the allegations. She confessed to lying about the incident in a recent interview while serving time in prison for second-degree murder. Mangum expressed regret for betraying the trust of the players and fabricating the story for validation from people rather than from God. The charges against the players were eventually dropped, but the case highlighted issues of gender, race, and class. Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong was disbarred for withholding evidence that could have cleared the men. Mangum now hopes the players can forgive her for the harm she caused them. She was convicted of second-degree murder in 2013 for fatally stabbing her boyfriend and is set to be released from prison in 2026. The former Duke players did not comment on Mangum’s confession.
