Fortnite players will now be eligible for refunds following Epic Games’ agreement with the FTC

The Federal Trade Commission announced that over 600,000 Fortnite players will receive refunds totaling $72 million due to unwanted purchases made in the game. The average payment per player is $114. This comes after a settlement two years ago where Epic Games was ordered to pay $520 million for collecting data from children without consent. Epic Games agreed to change its privacy policies and charging mechanisms as part of the settlement. The FTC claimed that Fortnite’s button configuration led to players unintentionally making purchases. Fortnite is a popular battle royale game with an estimated 30 million daily active players, although player statistics are not publicly shared. Eligible players can still submit a claim for a refund online, with a deadline of Jan. 10. Epic Games did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the refunds.
