The Solana Beach City Council is set to vote on Dec. 11 on the approval for the planning and construction of a new Marine Safety Center at the current South Sierra Avenue location. The existing center, built in the 1940s, has needed frequent repairs and maintenance due to the city’s growth, technological advancements, and changes in regulations.
The idea for a new Marine Safety Center was approved in 2017, following a needs assessment. Taking public feedback into consideration, the proposed facility will have a smaller square footage footprint and more publicly open space. It will be approximately 4,300 square feet and include an observation area, first aid room, locker rooms, and other facilities for city workers, standing at around 25 feet tall.
The city staff report emphasizes the increasing operational demands for the Marine Safety Staff as tourism and Solana Beach’s popularity continue to grow. Additionally, with the 50-year Army Corps of Engineers beach nourishment program underway, more visibility, equipment, and personnel will be needed to ensure safety along the coastline.
Earlier this year, the City Council approved the use of story poles to begin the view assessment process for the new facility. The project aims to serve the Solana Beach community and provide safe and enjoyable public beach recreational areas for residents and visitors.
