Students at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California, have gained widespread attention online after two female cross country athletes were told they could not wear shirts reading “Save Women’s Sports”. This incident occurred as a biological male who identifies as trans was allowed to compete on the school team, taking a varsity spot from a female player.
Student Rylee Morrow spoke out at a school board meeting, expressing her concerns about sharing a locker room with a biological male, stating that it does not feel safe. She criticized the school for prioritizing one individual over the entire team. The situation escalated further when a viral TikTok video revealed that the school had implemented a new dress code to prevent students from wearing the controversial shirts, leading to disciplinary actions against those who did not comply.
Prominent activists against the inclusion of biological males in female sports took to social media to support the students. Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines and California Family Council outreach director Sophia Lorey criticized the school for infringing on the students’ First Amendment rights and punishing them for defending what they believe is right.
