Syrian President Bashar Assad has reportedly left the country for an undisclosed location, according to a Syrian opposition war monitor. This news comes as Syrian insurgents have entered Damascus, leading to sounds of gunfire and explosions in the capital. The insurgency also announced the takeover of Homs, Syria’s third-largest city, as government forces withdrew. This marks the rebels’ control of multiple cities in a lightning offensive that began on Nov. 27.
World leaders, including the U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have expressed concern over the situation. The U.N. called for urgent talks in Geneva for an orderly political transition in Syria, while Russian support for Assad appears to be waning.
