U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar hails the CHIPS Act as a major win for Minnesota, as multiple companies in the state apply for funding. With President Biden’s administration coming to a close, it remains uncertain which firms will receive aid next. Klobuchar emphasizes the need to expand beyond traditional tech hubs in California and New York and focus on tech in Minnesota.
The funding awarded to SkyWater will enhance the company’s ongoing facility and equipment upgrades totaling over $320 million through 2026. SkyWater, originally built by Control Data in the 1980s and later acquired by private investors in 2017, received a $170 million grant from the Department of Defense in 2020 to expand chip production for the military.
Klobuchar underscores the importance of government support in fostering technological innovation and economic growth in Minnesota. The CHIPS Act, championed by the senator, aims to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. As the chips industry continues to evolve, it presents new opportunities for Minnesota-based companies to thrive in the growing tech sector.
