Investigation Launched by Mexican Authorities into Deaths of 13 Children Associated with Contaminated IV Bags

Health authorities in Mexico are investigating the deaths of 13 children who were infected with a drug-resistant bacteria likely originating from IV feeding bags in four different hospitals. The bacteria, called Klebsiella oxytoca, caused blood infections in the children, all under 14 years old. Seven patients are currently receiving treatment in hospitals. The outbreak was first identified in November at three government hospitals and one private hospital near Mexico City. Of the 20 cases identified, 15 have been confirmed to have the bacteria, with four considered probable cases. The company that produces the suspected IV fluid, Productos Hospitalarios S.A. de C.V., has had its contract and registration suspended.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed sadness over the situation and emphasized that the cause of death is being thoroughly investigated. Mexico’s Health Secretary is leading the inquiry into the outbreak. The exact source of the bacteria is still under investigation, but it is believed to be linked to nutritional IV fluids or the equipment used to administer them. The Ministry of Health issued an Epidemiological Alert and instructed doctors to stop using IV nutrition bags from the company in question.

In recent years, Mexico has experienced issues with contaminated medical supplies, including a meningitis outbreak that resulted in 25 deaths and 79 illnesses due to contaminated morphine. Officials are working to prevent further harm and ensure the safety of medical procedures and supplies in the country.
