Trans people from all over the United States journeyed to the Supreme Court to attend a groundbreaking case.

Transgender individuals, families, and allies gathered outside the Supreme Court as the justices reviewed a Tennessee law banning puberty blockers and hormone therapy for trans minors. Many shared personal stories of how access to transition-related care had a positive impact on their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

The central issue being considered is whether the law discriminates based on sex. The decision in this case, United States v. Skrmetti, could have significant implications for similar laws in 25 other states, as well as for a proposed federal policy to restrict transition-related care. During oral arguments, the conservative-leaning court seemed skeptical of the argument that the law discriminates based on sex.

Many supporters of trans rights gathered outside the court to show solidarity and urge the justices to consider the impact of their decision on marginalized communities. Some had personal connections to the case, having had to relocate to states with more supportive policies. Others expressed concern about the potential consequences of upholding the law, with one attendee warning that the court would have “blood on its hands” if the law is allowed to stand.

Counterprotesters organized by a conservative medical policy group also gathered outside the court, advocating against transition-related care for minors. Some argued that such care should be replaced with counseling and psychotherapy, emphasizing a focus on “science above ideology.” Despite differing viewpoints, the rally underscored the high stakes involved in the Supreme Court’s decision on trans rights.
