South Korean president faces looming impeachment vote as party vows to oppose

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s party vows to oppose impeachment efforts following his failed attempt to impose martial law. Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun resigned, taking full responsibility for the incident, with Choi Byung-hyuk named as his successor. Yoon’s office also faced resignations from his chief of staff and senior presidential secretaries. The declaration of martial law, the first since 1980, was rescinded after lawmakers and protesters opposed it.

The Democratic Party announced plans to hold a vote for the impeachment motion on Saturday. Despite opposition within his own party, Yoon faces a potential impeachment unless PPP lawmakers break party lines. If the motion passes, the Constitutional Court would hold a trial within 180 days to confirm the impeachment. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized Yoon’s decision, emphasizing the need for a peaceful process in South Korea’s democracy.

The widespread opposition to martial law from both progressives and conservatives highlighted the strength of South Korean democracy. Both U.S. officials stressed the importance of following the constitution and rule of law in resolving the situation. The Biden administration was not informed in advance of Yoon’s announcement, indicating the need for a peaceful resolution and respect for democratic principles in handling the aftermath of the failed martial law attempt.
