Chinese Man Arrested in the United States for Allegedly Sending Weapons to North Korea

A Chinese man living in the U.S. illegally, Shenghua Wen, was arrested and accused of exporting guns and ammunition to North Korea and planning to send other technology to the country. Wen was living in Southern California on an expired visa when he conducted the illicit trade, sending at least two shipments of firearms and ammunition from the port in Long Beach to Hong Kong and then North Korea. Law enforcement seized some material before it could be shipped, including thousands of rounds of ammunition found in Wen’s home. Wen had met with North Korean officials in China before coming to the U.S. and was instructed to send goods to North Korea, according to court documents. He bought guns through straw buyers in Texas and drove them to California. The North Korean officials also requested civilian aircraft engines and military uniforms from Wen. He is charged with conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which carries up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Wen’s attorney information was not available.
