The rise of punk music was a reaction to the optimism of the hippy era, with its simple, fast and loud tunes and lyrics that rejected the status quo. The Zeros, often called the “Mexican Ramones,” were a Southern California band formed in Chula Vista, not Los Angeles. Their song “Don’t Push Me Around” is a perfect example of early punk music, full of energy and defiance. The Zeros’ ability to create frenzied, high-octane noise and sharp melodies set them apart in the punk scene. Fans of their music can catch Zeros 77, made up of original members, performing at Casbah on Nov. 29. If you have a local artist in mind for our “Song of the Week” feature, send us an email with a brief explanation of why you’ve been listening to them. Let’s support our local music scene!
