Republicans are gearing up for an ambitious 100-day agenda in the new year, with plans to renew $4 trillion in expiring tax cuts as a top priority. This tax cut, a signature achievement of the Trump administration’s first term, is intended to benefit high-income households the most. The Republican agenda also includes cuts to food stamps and healthcare programs, as well as rollbacks to green energy initiatives implemented by President Biden.
The GOP is planning to use the budget reconciliation process to pass these policies, allowing for easy approval in Congress without the threat of a filibuster. Democrats have pushed back against the Republican agenda, pointing out that despite a slim majority in the House, there is no clear mandate for far-right policy changes.
Republicans are confident that the tax cuts will pay for themselves through economic growth, despite concerns about increasing the federal deficit. Lawmakers have also not identified any revenue raisers or spending cuts to offset the significant cost of the tax breaks.
While GOP leaders are optimistic about their ability to push through their agenda, there is no guarantee that they will be successful in accomplishing all of their goals. Democrats remain a formidable opponent in Congress, and the process of passing controversial policies could prove challenging. House Speaker Mike Johnson has pledged a “breakneck” pace in the first 100 days of the new year, signaling a determined effort to advance Republican priorities.
