Thessaloniki, Greece has unveiled its first-ever driverless metro system, powered by Hitachi Rail’s advanced CBTC technology. The phase-one launch covers 9.6 kilometers and 13 stations, aiming to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions in the city. Hitachi Rail’s CBTC system enables efficient train operations with shorter intervals, increasing capacity and reducing waiting times.
The metro project also respects the city’s archaeological heritage, with important finds displayed in the stations. Plans are already in place to extend the line by 4.8 kilometers, connecting the city center to the airport.
