Zoya, one of the world’s oldest Amur leopards, passed away at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert at the age of 21. The critically endangered species typically has a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years in the wild. Zoya had lived at the zoo for 11 years and was described as “spry and athletic” by the zoo’s website.
Amur leopards, named after the Amur River, have unique physical characteristics that help them navigate their snowy habitats. Despite her old age, Zoya was still engaging with visitors and inspiring passion for wildlife and conservation.
Living Desert officials expressed gratitude to the community for sharing in Zoya’s journey and ensuring her legacy endures. The zoo’s care team was praised for their expertise and dedication to Zoya’s wellbeing. The loss of Zoya serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species like the Amur leopard.
