Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb expressed concerns about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s agenda for the Department of Health and Human Services, which President-elect Donald Trump had nominated him for. Gottlieb warned that if Kennedy follows through on his intentions, it could cost lives in the country, especially in terms of vaccination rates for measles, mumps, and rubella. Kennedy has a history of vaccine skepticism, including spreading false claims linking vaccines to autism. He has also cast doubt on the effectiveness of Covid vaccines.
Gottlieb mentioned that Kennedy’s controversial ideas on abortion and potential impact on food prices may cause Republican senators to be reluctant to confirm him. Kennedy’s advisor, Del Bigtree, suggested that Kennedy wouldn’t compromise his values once in power. However, Gottlieb was confident that Trump does not share Kennedy’s beliefs about vaccines and does not want to see a resurgence of preventable diseases in the country.
Kennedy has a history of skepticism about vaccines, including the false claim that the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine can cause autism. He has also questioned the safety and effectiveness of Covid vaccines. Gottlieb believes that Kennedy’s intentions could lead to dangerous policy changes if he is confirmed as HHS secretary, and he expressed concern about the potential impact on public health in the United States.
