Several Democratic members of Congress from Connecticut, including Reps. Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, and John Larson, reported bomb threats on their homes. Thankfully, police found no evidence of a bomb on the lawmakers’ properties. This comes after President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks and appointees also reported receiving bomb threats and “swatting attacks.”
Courtney’s home in Vernon received a bomb threat while his family was inside, while Himes was notified of a threat during a Thanksgiving celebration with his family. The U.S. Capitol Police and local police departments responded promptly to ensure their safety. Larson also reported a bomb threat against his home in East Hartford.
The lawmakers expressed gratitude to law enforcement and called for peace and civility, denouncing political violence in the country. This incident is part of a trend of violence during the recent election season, including a gunman opening fire at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania and a thwarted assassination attempt at Trump’s golf course in Florida.
Other political figures who received threats included New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick for ambassador to the UN; Matt Gaetz, Trump’s initial choice for attorney general; Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, tapped to lead the Department of Labor; and former New York congressman Lee Zeldin, chosen to head the EPA.
This news is alarming and highlights the need for continued vigilance against threats of violence towards public officials. The investigation into the motives behind these threats is ongoing, and authorities are working to ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
