A new initiative called the 25×25 California Coaches Challenge aims to address declining physical activity and sports participation rates among children in California. With the goal of training at least 25,000 coaches by 2025, the initiative seeks to create a more positive and inclusive sports and fitness culture that keeps youth engaged in sports and helps them develop essential skills. The Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being is promoting the initiative statewide, focusing on communities with significant need and underrepresentation in youth sports.
Kevin Connors, Managing Director of the Susan Crown Exchange, which funds the Million Coaches Challenge, believes that California is setting a powerful example for the country by prioritizing youth development through sports. The initiative aims to ensure that hundreds of thousands of young athletes have access to sports experiences that promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
In addition to the 25×25 California Coaches Challenge, the Move Your Body, Calm Your Mind campaign launched by the Governor’s Advisory Council provides guidance and resources on physical activity and mental well-being for Californians of all ages. The campaign focuses on increasing awareness of the benefits of movement, sport, nutrition, and mental wellness, promoting equitable access to outdoor and physical activities for underserved communities, and facilitating collaboration among various sectors to promote movement and mental wellness.
Overall, these initiatives aim to train one million coaches in youth development practices by 2025 to ensure that all young athletes have access to quality sports experiences that help them succeed both on and off the field.
