Transformers upgraded with WEG’s hybrid paper technology

WEG, in collaboration with COPEL, UFSM, and VEGOOR Tecnologia Aplicada, has successfully completed a research project in Brazil focused on increasing the reliability and useful life of power transformers. The project involved replacing Kraft paper with hybrid paper as a solid insulator in the active part of transformers. The technology upgrade also included the use of vegetable insulating liquid and a direct temperature measurement system for detailed monitoring of the equipment’s internal thermal state.

The three-phase step-up transformer, originally manufactured in 1969, underwent a complete technological overhaul, resulting in an increase in power output to 73.6 MVA. The transformer was reinstalled at the Governador Parigot de Souza Hydroelectric Plant in ParanĂ¡, where it will not only enhance the plant’s reliability but also operate more sustainably.

The use of vegetable oil and hybrid paper in the transformer contributes to reducing environmental impact and costs, particularly in the event of leaks. The project represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions and technological innovation in the power sector.

This successful collaboration highlights the potential for technological advancements to improve the efficiency and sustainability of power transformers, ultimately benefiting both the energy industry and the environment. WEG’s commitment to research and development, in partnership with leading organizations, underscores their dedication to driving progress in the field of power generation and distribution.
