Penguin at SeaWorld marks its 40th birthday

Best Friend, a male macaroni penguin at SeaWorld San Diego, recently turned 40 years old, making him a rare and special penguin. The average macaroni penguin typically lives 15 years in the wild and 30 years in captivity, making Best Friend’s longevity impressive. Belnick, a zoological specialist at SeaWorld, credits the excellent care provided to Best Friend for his long life. Only 1% of penguins typically live to see 40, making Best Friend’s milestone a significant achievement. While Best Friend is currently the oldest penguin at SeaWorld, there was an emperor penguin at the park who reached 49 years old a few years ago. SeaWorld emphasizes conservation and using ambassador animals like Best Friend to represent their species. Belnick and her coworkers at the Penguin Encounter are thrilled to celebrate Best Friend’s 40th birthday and are proud of the care they provide to him and other penguins at the park.
