UCLA Bruins Secure 84-70 Win Over Idaho State with Stellar Long-Range Shooting
LOS ANGELES — In a thrilling display of sharpshooting, the UCLA Bruins triumphed over Idaho State, clinching an 84-70 victory on Wednesday night. The game highlighted head coach Mick Cronin’s innovative strategy of utilizing players in the power forward role as "big guards."
Eric Dailey Jr. and Tyler Bilodeau epitomized this strategy, combining for an impressive shooting performance. Bilodeau led the team with 20 points, demonstrating his prowess from beyond the arc by going 4-for-4 on 3-pointers, while Dailey contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. The Bruins managed to shake off earlier shooting struggles, going 9-for-14 (64.3%) from 3-point range — a stark contrast to their previous season average.
UCLA took an early lead, with Dailey scoring a basket on a fast break and later sinking a crucial shot as the shot clock expired. Bilodeau quickly entered the game, further widening the lead with timely 3-pointers. Adding to the offensive burst, Sebastian Mack showcased his skills, leading the team with 21 points and going 15-for-16 at the free-throw line.
Despite Idaho State keeping the game relatively close, Cronin opted for a shorter rotation, limiting minutes for some players while emphasizing defensive efforts. As the team continues to refine its identity and roles, Mack has consistently stepped up, asserting himself as a key contributor.
The Bruins now stand at 4-1, marking their third consecutive victory. With two nonconference games remaining before their Big Ten opener against Washington on December 3, UCLA is poised to build on their momentum. The next challenge awaits on Friday as they host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
