Geno Auriemma Breaks NCAA Coaching Record as UConn Dominates Fairleigh Dickinson
STORRS, Conn. — Geno Auriemma made history on Wednesday night, becoming the winningest coach in NCAA college basketball with his 1,217th victory as the No. 2 UConn Huskies convincingly defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 85-41. Auriemma surpassed former Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer for the most all-time wins, while legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski holds the men’s record at 1,202 victories.
Since taking over the UConn program in 1985, Auriemma has achieved an impressive 1,217-162 record, with only one losing season in his first year. Before his arrival, the Huskies had just one winning season, but his leadership has transformed the program into a national powerhouse.
The game also served as a celebration of Auriemma’s and associate head coach Chris Dailey’s 40 years at UConn, with over 60 former players in attendance, including notable alumni such as Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, and Rebecca Lobo.
On the court, UConn showcased their talent, with star player Paige Bueckers leading the way with 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Freshman Sarah Strong also shined with a career-high 20 points. UConn started strong, expanding their lead after a close first quarter, and Fairleigh Dickinson (4-2) never threatened the lead thereafter.
In a significant moment for fans, Azzi Fudd made her return to the lineup after a year-long recovery from a right knee injury, receiving a warm ovation from the crowd.
The Huskies are now 4-0 this season, and Auriemma’s milestone victory marks a remarkable achievement in college basketball history. More details and reactions from this historic night are expected to follow.
