Daily News: El Camino Real’s girls flag football team defeats San Fernando to earn spot in first championship game

El Camino Real’s girls flag football team has made history by earning a spot in the L.A. City Section Division II finals for the first time. Despite starting their season later than most teams, the Royals secured a spot in the championship game with a dominant 41-18 victory over San Fernando in the semifinals. Led by quarterback Talya Haim, who threw for 252 yards and five touchdowns, the Royals have showcased a potent offense in the postseason, scoring at least 40 points in each game.

San Fernando quarterback Daniella Martinez put up a valiant effort with 153 total yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Royals’ high-powered offense. Despite the loss, San Fernando coach Ted Painchaud commended his team’s efforts this season, especially considering they had only one returning starter from the previous year.

The Royals will face Cleveland in the Division II final, poised to claim their first championship in their inaugural season of flag football. Players like Amaya Perry, with nine catches for 80 yards and three touchdowns, and Bianca Espiritu, who recorded seven catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns, have been instrumental in El Camino Real’s success.

Reflecting on the journey to the championship game, Perry expressed the team’s unity and determination to win, emphasizing the significance of achieving success in their first year of flag football at El Camino Real. Haim echoed Perry’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of teamwork and trust in their pursuit of a championship. The Royals look forward to the final with confidence, eager to make history and cap off their remarkable season.
