In a historic announcement from Major League Baseball, Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale and Detroit Tigers hurler Tarik Skubal were honored with the prestigious Cy Young Awards on Wednesday, recognizing their outstanding performance throughout the 2024 season. Both left-handers led the MLB with 18 wins while dominating their respective leagues in strikeouts and ERA.
Sale, in his first season with the Braves, achieved an impressive record of 18-3, amassing 225 strikeouts and a 2.38 ERA over 29 starts. This marks Sale’s eighth All-Star selection, and he also secured his inaugural Gold Glove award this year. He garnered 26 of 30 first-place votes in the National League, with fellow pitcher Zack Wheeler finishing as the runner-up.
On the American League side, Skubal celebrated his 28th birthday by winning his title with a stellar record of 18-4, a 2.39 ERA, and leading the league with 228 strikeouts in 31 starts. His unanimous victory in AL voting further underlines his stellar performance this season. Kansas City’s Seth Lugo finished second in AL voting.
Both Sale and Skubal join an elite group of pitchers who have led their leagues in wins, strikeouts, and ERA, having each secured a Cy Young Award under such conditions. Their achievements highlight a remarkable journey, particularly for Sale, who rebounded from significant injuries over the past few years.
With these victories, Sale collects the Braves’ eighth Cy Young award and Skubal adds to Detroit’s legacy with their sixth. As the 2024 season concludes, both teams look forward to building on their pitchers’ success in the upcoming season. More updates on this story will follow.
