Bell Gardens Claims CIF State Division V Regional Title After Thrilling Match Against Reseda
VAN NUYS — In a showcase of resilience and athleticism, Bell Gardens (24-18) triumphed over Reseda (20-4) in the CIF State Division V Regional Final, clinching victory in four gripping sets: 25-15, 16-25, 25-17, 25-18.
The match, hosted at Van Nuys High School, started with Bell Gardens asserting dominance, thanks in part to senior middle blocker Karina Toro, whose quick adjustments impressed both on offense and defense. After taking an early lead, the Lancers solidified their first-set win through a series of decisive plays, including an immediate kill and a vital block from Toro.
Reseda responded fiercely in the second set, spearheaded by outside hitter Layla Reyes, who delivered multiple aces and maintained her team’s momentum to capture a 25-16 victory. However, Bell Gardens regained control in the third set, led by Maggie Chairez’s offensive prowess, allowing them to edge out a 25-17 win.
The final set saw Bell Gardens facing a 5-1 deficit early on. However, determined teamwork and strategic timeout calls led to a remarkable comeback. Toro’s scoring streak helped the Lancers secure the set and the regional championship with a 25-18 finish.
Head coach Caleb Ortiz credited his team’s composure under pressure, emphasizing the importance of maintaining calm during the match’s intensity. The electric atmosphere was amplified by supportive fans from both schools, creating a vibrant environment filled with spirited chants and celebrations.
With this victory, Bell Gardens advances to face Immanuel of Reedley in the state championship game on Friday at Santiago Canyon College.
