The Los Angeles City Attorney’s office has determined that there is insufficient evidence to press charges related to a racist recording that led to the resignation of Council President Nury Martinez two years ago. The audio captured Martinez along with other council members and officials making racist comments targeting Councilman Mike Bonin’s Black son. The leak of the recording led to protests and calls for resignation, resulting in Martinez and another official stepping down.
Councilman Kevin de León, who was also involved in the scandal, offered apologies but refused to resign immediately. After surviving a recall election, de León announced his bid for re-election but will face political newcomer Ysabel Jurado in the upcoming general election. Meanwhile, Martinez’s vacant seat in Council District 6 was filled by Imelda Padilla after a special election saw a low voter turnout.
The scandal prompted an investigation by the California Attorney General and led to the uncovering of insensitive remarks made during conversations about redistricting. Despite the fallout and resignations, the City Attorney concluded that there was insufficient evidence to file criminal charges. The incident has triggered a wave of public outcry against racism and insensitivity within the city council and has significant implications for the upcoming election cycle.
