Cathedral Catholic’s girls volleyball team showed their depth and determination in a thrilling victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei in the CIF State Open Division Southern California Regional Championships. Led by Mae Kordas, the Dons received key contributions from underclassmen like Madyson McCarthy, Sophia Johnson, and Jojo Wilson on their way to a 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22 win.
Kordas had a match-high 17 kills and was instrumental in securing the victory for her team. Other players, such as McCarthy, Johnson, and Wilson, also made important plays to help propel Cathedral Catholic to the state championship match against Archbishop Mitty.
The team’s coach, Juliana Conn, praised the players for their aggressiveness and teamwork, emphasizing the importance of everyone contributing to the team’s success. The Dons displayed resilience and determination, particularly in tight moments when they needed to step up and make big plays.
In a separate match, Eastlake fell to Bakersfield Centennial in the Division 2 Southern California Regional final, ending their season with a 28-12 record. Despite the loss, Eastlake had a successful season, including a 10-match winning streak.
Cathedral Catholic now looks ahead to the state championship match, where they will face Archbishop Mitty on Saturday at Santiago Canyon College. The team is confident in their abilities and is focused on winning the state title with a collective effort from all players.
