A 61-year-old man was apprehended by Santa Monica police for allegedly booby-trapping a residence with ammunition and homemade trigger devices, as well as making criminal threats. The incident, which occurred on the 3300 block of Exposition Boulevard, involved shots being fired, prompting a police response. Inside the residence, officers found two women and Arthur Tabuchi, along with a shotgun mounted on a workbench in the garage. Further investigation revealed a spring-loaded firing pin with a wire that was set to fire the shell towards the garage door. Another shotgun with a similar setup was found near a pedestrian gate.
The Los Angeles County bomb squad assisted in clearing the residence, but no additional booby traps were discovered. Illegal ammunition was seized during a search warrant execution. Tabuchi was sent for a mental health evaluation before being booked on charges related to the booby trap.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Detective James McCoy or Sgt. Shaun Cooney. The watch commander can be reached at all hours. The swift and skilled response of the Santa Monica Police Department neutralized a potentially dangerous situation and ensured the safety of the community.
