E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Organic Carrots Claims One Life and Affects 39 Others
An outbreak of E. coli tied to bagged organic carrots has resulted in 39 infections across 18 states, with one fatality reported. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Sunday that among the ill, 15 individuals have been hospitalized after consuming organic whole and baby carrots sourced from Grimmway Farms, a company based in Bakersfield, California.
In response to the situation, Grimmway Farms has issued a recall for the affected carrots, which were sold under various brand names, including 365, Cal-Organic, Nature’s Promise, O-Organics, Trader Joe’s, and Wegmans. Although these products are no longer available in stores, the CDC advises consumers to check their refrigerators and dispose of any recalled carrots that may still be in their possession. The most significant number of infections has been reported in New York, Minnesota, and Washington, with additional cases in California and Oregon.
This outbreak is among a series of recent E. coli incidents, including an October episode that sickened over 100 McDonald’s customers linked to slivered onions. Even though the frequency of these outbreaks is notable, experts maintain that the overall food supply remains safe. However, they emphasize the need for ongoing efforts to reduce E. coli infections.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has indicated that the recalled organic carrots have best-by dates ranging from September 11 to November 12. Symptoms of E. coli infection can occur three to four days post-exposure and typically include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. Individuals experiencing severe symptoms are urged to seek medical attention and inform healthcare providers of their recent food intake. The FDA particularly highlights the risk E. coli poses to vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
