Trump’s Tariff Strategy Will Not Benefit American Workers – Daily News

Press Article: Trump’s Tariff Policy Misguided Amid Promises of Prosperity

President-elect Donald Trump has reignited discussions of his economic vision for America, pledging to unleash a “golden age.” While his plans for tax cuts and deregulation appear promising, his infatuation with tariffs is raising alarms among economists and industry experts.

Trump has suggested imposing a sweeping 20% tariff on all imported goods, claiming that such measures will promote domestic production. In his previous term, he branded himself a “Tariff man,” expressing that “tariff” is “the most beautiful word in the dictionary.” However, tariffs are essentially taxes on imports, increasing costs for American companies reliant on foreign goods, from raw materials to finished products.

Research from the National Bureau of Economic Research has shown that previous tariffs under Trump’s administration did not benefit U.S. employment in protected sectors and had negative repercussions for agricultural jobs due to retaliatory measures. The Tax Foundation estimates that Trump’s proposed tariffs could lead to an annual tax increase of $524 billion, a shrinking GDP, and the loss of nearly 684,000 jobs.

Despite theories suggesting that tariffs serve as useful negotiation tools, experts like Clark Packard from the Cato Institute argue that this approach has only inflicted significant costs on American families and businesses without altering China’s economic practices.

As Trump prepares for his potential second term, it’s crucial for him to pivot away from tariffs—policies that historically burden consumers and stifle economic growth—and focus instead on initiatives that genuinely benefit the American workforce, such as further deregulation and impactful tax reforms. Economic stability, rather than misguided tariff strategies, should be the priority.
