The Influence of Black Twitter on the Internet and the Future after Leaving Musk-led X

Black users, who have been a key component of social media engagement and influence, are leaving X, formerly Twitter, due to issues such as bots, harassment, and partisan ads related to the presidential election. This mass exodus may result in the end of “Black Twitter,” a group known for discussions on social issues, pop culture, and activism.

The future of Black Twitter is uncertain as more users seek alternative text-based social media platforms such as Bluesky, Threads, or Spill. The recent changes at X, including Elon Musk’s involvement and new terms of service, have accelerated the departure of users, with over 115,000 accounts deactivated in one day.

Bluesky, a platform that has seen a surge in users, is being embraced by former Black Twitter users for its user-friendly interface, moderation lists, and anti-toxicity safety features. Prominent figures, like Gabrielle Union and Don Lemon, have left X, citing concerns over misinformation and a shift towards right-wing ideologies.

Despite the migration to other platforms, some users, like Pariss Chandler, are still planning to keep their Twitter accounts for community mobilization. Users on Bluesky, such as Rudy Fraser, are working to create inclusive spaces like Blacksky, which has already garnered a significant number of views.

Overall, the departure of Black users from X and the rise of alternative platforms may result in a new chapter for the erstwhile “Black Twitter” community, with users aiming to recreate the positive aspects of their previous online interactions in new spaces.
