This holiday season, Americans are determined to travel, with many utilizing the ability to work remotely as a way to make these trips possible. According to a Deloitte survey, around 49% of employed travelers plan to work at some point during their holiday vacations, up from 34% last year. This flexibility allows workers to take longer trips or visit destinations they might not have been able to otherwise. Gen Zers and high earners make up the highest shares of “laptop luggers,” with 58% and 52%, respectively.
Remote work has become a priority for job seekers, with the ability to work from anywhere being a top reason for seeking remote jobs. High-income earners are leading holiday travel and spending trends this year, with 52% of those making $100,000 or more saying they can easily afford holiday travel expenses. Millennials have the highest budgets and plan to take an average of 2.6 trips during the holiday season, spending around $3,927.
To save money on holiday travel, many are utilizing strategies such as driving instead of flying, cutting back on other expenses, and taking advantage of discounts and deals. It is essential for those planning to work during their trip to review their company’s remote work policies and ensure they have a reliable internet connection. Despite the challenges of the past few years, Americans are still prioritizing travel and experiences, making room in their budgets for these activities.
