The National City City Council is considering censuring Councilmember Jose Rodriguez for alleged violations of the city’s code of conduct, including using city resources for personal gain and making disparaging remarks about other officials. Mayor Ron Morrison stated that Rodriguez’s behavior exhibited a pattern of unethical conduct, leading to the vote for censure. Rodriguez, who recently won re-election with over 73 percent of the vote, denies the allegations and dismisses the censure vote as politically motivated. The code of conduct prohibits council members from using public resources for personal purposes and from slandering or disparaging fellow officials. Morrison accused Rodriguez of using city-funded staff for personal events disguised as city business and making false accusations against opponents during his campaign. Despite the censure, Rodriguez’s status on the Council will remain unchanged, but the vote will serve as a formal reprimand of his behavior. Other Councilmembers asked for the censure after attempts to address the issues with Rodriguez directly were unsuccessful. Rodriguez, however, has focused on his re-election victory and plans to continue serving his community by prioritizing affordable housing and protecting undocumented residents. Despite criticism during his first term for alleged ethical violations, Rodriguez was re-elected by a large margin and continues to push for community-focused initiatives.
