Warren Football Team Dominates Golden Valley, Secures Spot in CIF Semifinals
DOWNEY – Warren High School’s football squad rebounded from an early setback to decisively defeat Golden Valley 40-14 in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 quarterfinals on Friday night. The Bears, now boasting a record of 5-7, are set to face Yucaipa in the semifinals next week.
Initially, Warren lagged behind, trailing 14-7 at halftime following a late touchdown from Golden Valley’s senior Jamison Torres. However, the Bears’ relentless defense and powerful running game shone in the second half, effectively shutting down the Grizzlies and denying them any further points. Warren’s defense pressured Golden Valley’s quarterback, Brandon Contreras, leading to two interceptions and three sacks, limiting his second-half passing to just 29 yards.
The offensive turnaround was led by dynamic running backs Skylar Lendsey and Teralle Watson, who combined for four rushing touchdowns. Lendsey finished the game with 137 yards on 12 carries and contributed two touchdowns, including a stunning 41-yard run. Watson added 49 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns as well.
Head coach Adam Leonard credited effective preparation and mental adjustments for the Bears’ turnaround. "It was a great week of preparation," he remarked, emphasizing the team’s ability to trust their training. Lendsey echoed this sentiment, highlighting their halftime discussions that fueled their determination to improve after a rocky start.
Additionally, quarterback Jemar Malone’s contributions included a 15-yard rushing touchdown and a 37-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jalen Ross in the second half. Leonard expressed confidence in his team’s abilities, stating, "We’re blessed to have Jemar… We have full confidence in our running backs and offensive line to be successful."
With their eyes now set on the semifinals, Warren aims to continue their successful run in the playoffs.
